Jerry Chismar

Jerome "Jerry" Chismar, 74, of Bellaire, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on May 11, 2014 at his home. Jerry was born on March 3, 1940, in Youngstown, OH, the son of Stephen and Helen (Betsa) Chismar. For many years Jerry owned and operated Windmill Farms Restaurant in Mancelona. He is also a long time member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Bellaire. Prior to moving to Northern Michigan he worked as a police officer in Dearborn Heights, served on the Dearborn Heights City Council and was a member of the Marine Corps League where he played taps for many veterans funerals. He enjoyed weightlifting, playing in bands, riding his Harley Davidson as well as working as a security guard at Shanty Creek in Bellaire. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. On August 22, 1959, in Livonia, he married Marilynn Hoffmann who survives. Also surviving are 3 children, Robert Chismar of Los Angeles, CA, Craig (Lisa) Chismar of Canton, MI, Maryjo (Mark) Vernon of Milford, MI, 3 brothers, Stephen Chismar of Toledo, OH, Philip (Ruth) Chismar of Sahuarita, AZ, Fred (Debi) Chismar of Amado, AZ, 5 grandchildren, Allison, David, Andrew, Adam and Aaron as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Patricia and his parents. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Canton, MI. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church. Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 15 from 4-8 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in the Holly National Cemetery.
