Janis Glass

Janis Glass of Charlevoix passed away at home on Dec. 29, 2018, at the age of 81.

A well-known local artist, Jan painted award-winning watercolors that were exhibited at the Detroit Institute of the Arts and at other museums and galleries around the state. Her signature work consisted of delicate botanical paintings of plants native to the North Point area where she lived. For nearly a decade, she wrote and illustrated a weekly column for the Charlevoix Courier on the natural beauty of her home region.

Jan painted a large-scale mural for the Charlevoix Historical Society and produced the cast-relief tile featured above the fireplace in the Belvedere Room of the Charlevoix Public Library. She had a degree in art education from Central Michigan University, and she taught art in both public and private schools in several Michigan communities, as well as at Bay View and the Crooked Tree Arts Center.

A fourth-generation resident of Charlevoix, Jan served on several local volunteer boards. She and her late husband, Dale Glass, shared a love of gardening, walking the North Point Nature Preserve and researching the genealogy of their families.

Janis Glass is survived by her children, Laura and Craig, granddaughters Lindsay Thomas, Lauren Glass and Hannah Glass, brother Michael Arbuckle and sister Kathy Anderson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Bergman Center, 8888 Ance Road, Charlevoix, or the Charlevoix Public Library, 220 Clinton St., Charlevoix.

Funeral services will be held at the Community Reformed Church on Saturday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m.
