Janice Clare Smith, 74 of Charlevoix, died peacefully, Tues. Mar. 7, 2017 at Hiland Cottages in Petoskey.
She was born April 1, 1942 in Detroit, the daughter of Milo W. and Clarice E. (McClure) Smith. After graduating from Cooley High School she went on to earn her bachelor degree in education from Wayne State University. She taught for 15 years at Angel School in Detroit before falling ill. Growing up Janice was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Detroit.
Currently, Janice was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Charlevoix and in her younger years she enjoyed teaching Sunday School there. She also enjoyed watching the birds, gardening, and flowers. Although she couldn’t partake in the planting she loved what bloomed.
Surviving Janice is her beloved sister Lillian Reetz, nephews Stephen (Kristine) Reetz, David (Heather) Reetz, niece Krista (Bill) Thorburn, and 6 great nieces and nephews; all of Minnesota. Preceding her in death are her parents, her stepmother Bertha, and her brother in law Frederick.
Interment will take place in Brookside Cemetery, next to her parents in the spring. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to Juvenile Diabetes, JDRF, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
