James H Van Houten

James H. Van Houten, 94 of Central Lake passed away on August 17, 2024 at home. He was born February 6, 1930 in Carleton, MI, the youngest son of John and Verna (Heiss) Van Houten.

Jim was a known craftsman and prided himself on land development. He, along with his son Ken, built many homes in the area as the owner of Van Houten Builders. He had a special love of farming and could often be found on a tractor in the fields or on his lawn mower, even as recent as last week. Jim spent hours in his retirement years at King Orchards with his dear friends, John and Betsy King, “working” on the farm in all capacities.

On October 20, 1950, Jim married Theresa L. Lessard who preceded him in death in 2020 after 70 years of marriage. Also preceding him in death are his parents and his brothers Morris, Hilton, Alvin and his beloved dog Charlie.

He is survived by his children Beth Brooks of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Daniel (Rachel) Van Houten, of Acme, Dawn Van Houten of Traverse City, Ken (LaShelle) Van Houten of Central Lake, Jill (Rocky) McKay of Central Lake, Destiny (Joel) Narloch of Oxford, Desmond (Rachel) Van Houten of Appleton, WI, grandchildren Adam (Beth) Van Houten, Nathan Van Houten, Justin Van Houten, Josh (Haley) Van Houten, Kirk McKay, Kyle McKay, Tracy (Qito) Maza and 19 great grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time. Memorial donations can be given to the Central Lake United Methodist Church, PO BOX 213, Central Lake, MI 49622.

The family wishes to thank Brightstar and Hospice of Michigan for the care they gave Jim during the last few weeks.

Arrangements are in the care of the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
