James “Jim” Harvey Hernden, 81, of Elmira, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 3, 2024. He was born on January 9, 1943, in Detroit, MI, the son of Harvey and Elvarene (Rouse) Hernden.
Jim graduated from Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores, and for most of his working life, he operated heavy equipment for various construction companies, but he also drove truck, and retired from Indian Summer Recycling.
Jim loved spending time with his family more than anything else, especially his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In his free time, he enjoyed playing cards, trips to the casino, and watching black and white westerns.
On January 22, 2000, Jim married the love of his life, Melda (Brooks) Hernden, who survives. Also surviving are his ten children, Jill (Dean) Evans of Lakeland, FL, James Hernden of Lakeland, FL, Judilyn (Karl) Schwartz of Lakeland, FL, Joel (Kathleen) Hernden of Lakeland, FL, Jonathan (Erika) Hernden of Lakeland, FL, Tammy (Tom) Albers of Richmond, MI, Denise Brooks-Evans of Caro, MI, Martin Nickens of Detroit, MI, David Nickens (fiancé Autumn) of Kingston, MI, and Anne (Jeff) Sanders of Dexter, MI; his brother Thomas (Judy) Hernden of Elmira; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces & nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jack Hernden.
Jim’s family plans to celebrate his life in the summer of 2024.
