James “Jim” Berlage, 67, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025. He was born on May 29, 1957 in Toledo, OH, the son of Donald Berlage and Barbara Feldkircher. He lived a life devoted to God, learning, friendship, and music, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
His faith was the foundation that shaped his life. He was dedicated to helping others, particularly young people, discover the joy of God’s love. Through his work with the Youth for Christ organization, Jim gave back in the most meaningful way—by guiding and uplifting others.
Jim took great pride in his education, earning a degree from Michigan State University and applying his skills to his own company, Berlage Administrative Services. For the past ten years, he worked in finance with PFS Investments, finding immense satisfaction in helping his clients achieve financial success.
A lover of knowledge, Jim was previously the proud owner of The Bridge Street Book Store. When the Book Store ceased operation, Jim kept a collection of his favorite books, all titles that reflected his love of reading and learning. He enjoyed sharing his books with friends, always eager to spark new conversations and insights.
Music was the soundtrack to Jim’s life—his home was filled with the sounds of Big Bands, Jazz, Standards, and Gospel. Whether at home or in his car, Sirius Jazz played continuously, a testament to his deep appreciation for rhythm and soul. Jim demonstrated his musical acumen, for many years, as a saxophonist with the Charlevoix City Band. He also made a point to support local musicians, celebrating the beauty of live performance.
Jim cherished his family and friends, and when he called you a friend, it was a bond that lasted a lifetime. Friends were considered family to him.
Jim is survived by his two brothers Clint Berlage of Charlevoix and Steve (Cathy) Berlage of Troy, MI and four nieces and nephews Nicholas Berlage, Rachel Berlage, William Berlage and Ava Berlage.
A celebration of his life will be held on March 8, 2025 at New Hope Community Church, Williamsburg, MI, with visitation at 10:00am and service at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Diabetes Association or Youth for Christ.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
