Jacob Edwin Penfold, 76 of Banks Township, passed away on June 4, 2021 at his home.
He was born on May 27, 1945 in Charlevoix, the son of Darwin and Wilma (Veenstra) Penfold.
Jacob is described by his family as a selfless, generous, steadfast, strong and intelligent man.
Following high school, he volunteered to serve in the U.S.M.C. to fight in Vietnam. During battle he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. In 1967 he was honorably discharged as a CPL/E4.
He then went on to a lumber grading school and began working saw mills along with his father. Eventually they opened the Penfold Land and Lumber Supply in Atwood which became Penfold's Ace Hardware that he ran until his retirement in 2006.
Jacob is survived by a son Casey (Kathy) Penfold of Central Lake, 10 grandchildren, Robyn McCaslin (Travis Batten) of Bellaire, Tony McCaslin (Sean) of Santa Rosa, CA, Jacob (Alex) Roach of Elk Rapids, Ryan Penfold of Elk Rapids, Avery Penfold of Mancelona, Tabetha Penfold of Midland, Alex Jennings of Fife Lake, Jessica White of Central Lake, Jeffery Jennings of Traverse City, Hallie Jennings of Traverse City, 8 great-grandchildren, McKenzie Hoffman, Zackery Batten, Maralyn Roach, Miles Roach, Delaney White, Callie White, Paisley White, Kennedy Petrick and a 9th on the way. Also surviving are 8 siblings, Duane (Barbara) Penfold of Eugene, OR, Cheryl (Ralph) Umulis of Interlochen, Diane Sayward of Charlevoix, Paula Penfold of Charlevoix, Perry Penfold of Grand Rapids, Darrel Penfold of Grand Rapids, Dennis (Peggy) Penfold of Ellsworth, and Eileen (Scott) Glick of Niles, MI.
He was preceded in death by his wife Diane Penfold, daughter Amy McCaslin, a sister Sue Kobot and his parents.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church, 9323 Main St., Ellsworth, MI, 49729. Funeral services will be on Thursday, June 10 at 11:00 a.m. also at the church with Pastor James Zwier officiating.
Graveside services will immediately follow in Antrim City Cemetery where he will be laid to rest with military honors.
