Iris Maxine (Petrie) Shaw was born to Rodney and Doris Petrie on August 18, 1929 in Clawson, Michigan. She grew up in East Jordan, the oldest of seven children.
On March 5, 1955, she married William Judson Shaw. They had seven children. They were divorced in 1977, and Iris moved back to her hometown in 1988.
Iris was bright and inquisitive her entire life. She read encyclopedias for fun. Naturally astute, with thoughtfully formed opinions, Iris was primarily a good listener and was interested in other
peoples’ ideas. She always opted for relationship. Iris had a strong faith in Jesus Christ, which she approached with characteristic thoughtfulness and love of learning. While Iris did not feel comfortable evangelizing, she shared her faith easily through the way she lived. She enjoyed her church family at Bethel Baptist in East Jordan.
Iris was very frugal, saving carefully so that she could continue to explore and learn throughout her life. She traveled to the Philippines, spent several winters in Brazil and Mexico, visited
France, England and Scotland, as well as many parts of the United States.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Shirley Petrie, and brothers-in-law William Walker and Armand Drapeau.
She is survived by her children: Ann (Garry) Grimm, Bill (Debbi) Shaw, Sarah (Cosme) Sanchez, Jane Shaw, John (Laura) Shaw, Susan (Keith) Lardie, and Ben (Celia) Shaw; 22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Linda Walker, Jim
(Jean) Petrie, Elaine (Dale) Manning, Anita Drapeau, Kathy (Tom) Graham, and Norma Petrie, as well as many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Iris’ final weeks reflected her life-long values, surrounded by family, simple and very traditional. She will be missed every single day. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Hastings Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
