Harrison A. Elzinga

Harrison Arthur Elzinga, age 97 of Charlevoix, passed away on Sunday, December 15,2024 at American House of Charlevoix. Harrison was born September 12, 1927 in Charlevoix to Harry and Esther (Beatty) Elzinga.

His wife, Shirley (Krulik) Elzinga preceded him in death in July, 2021 after over 68 years of marriage. Harrison was also preceded in death by several siblings including a sister Rose in 2016 and a brother Gerrit in 2021.

Harrison served in the United States Marines spending time in China and Hawaii. He once said he was a “pilot” in the service – first he would pile it here and then pile it there. He went to work for Brown Motors and later retired from American Mold in Charlevoix. He put his good work with hands to use building the garage at his home along with help from several relatives.

Harrison enjoyed bowling in local leagues and tournaments. He also enjoyed game nights with friends playing pedro with the Empeys and dominoes with the Mumas among others.

Harrison is survived by his daughters, Carla Hopkins (Nate) and Aimee Cooper (Bill) both of New Jersey and his grandchildren Nathan (Brenden) and Corey (Luisa). He is also survived by one brother, Charlie and many nieces and nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank special nephews Terry Elzinga and Allen Burke and friends Wanda Carr and Bill Herriman. They would also like to thank the wonderful caregivers at American House of Charlevoix for their compassion and attention. They would like to thank the many volunteers at Meals on Wheels as well.

There will be a service planned in Spring, 2025. Arrangements are being handled by the Winchester Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Harrison’s memory may be made to the Charlevoix Senior Center, 13513 Division Street, Charlevoix or Freedom House Ministries, 6429 M66, Charlevoix.
