Gloria M. Dugan, 97, of Beaver Island, passed away on August 21, 2021 at her home.
Gloria was born on December 28, 1923, in Huron Township, Michigan, the daughter of Alpheus and Dorothy (O’Brien) Dugan.
She was a longtime math professor at Ball State University. Following retirement, she went on to teach at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. When she was not teaching there, she would travel back to spend time on her beloved Beaver Island.
Gloria enjoyed reading, going on walks with her friends on the Island, bird watching, and tutoring children in math.
Surviving are 3 nieces, Mary Clare Saxon of MO, Ann (Bill) Gonczy of Hassel, MI, Mary Therese Ortner of Detroit, MI, 2 nephews, William (Michele) Ortner of Dearborn, MI, Christopher Ortner of Lynn, MA. In addition, Gloria had 7 great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother Ralph “Bud” and sister-in-law Pauline Dugan; a sister, Delphene and brother-in-law Richard Ortner; and her parents.
A mass to celebrate Gloria’s life is planned for Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 11:00am at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Beaver Island with internment following the funeral mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, Beaver Island. Fr Pat Cawley officiating
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Beaver Island with a rosary at 6:30pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to either Beaver Island Rural Health Care or Beaver Island Library.
