George Balon, 86 of Bellaire died Sun. Jan. 4, 2015 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. He was born Apr. 14, 1928, in Bonne Madone, Saskatchewan, Canada the son of John and Mary Balon. George was a well known cabinet maker by trade. He worked for several years in Detroit in the business and then moved his family north to Bellaire. He owned and operated the Bellaire Bar from 1963 to 1979. In 1976 George decided to continue his passion for cabinet making and opened his own cabinet business which he ran until 2011. In his early years, George was an Antrim County Commissioner and on the Bellaire Village Counsel. On July 18, 1953, in Windsor, Ontario, he married Doreen Lefebre who survives. Also surviving are his children Dennis (Deborah) Balon of Bellaire, Donald (Leslie) Balon of Bellaire, Vicki Dellot of Saline, brother Ernie (Jean) Balon of Saskatchewan, Canada, sister Eileen Hnidy of Wakaw, Saskatchewan, 7 grandchildren Jessica (Stephen) Villerot, Ashleigh (Nolan) Clark, Madalyn Balon, Johnathan (Logan) Balon, Mitchell, Nolan, Mason Dellot, 3 great grandchildren Elayna Mae Clark, Jordyn Balon, Jack Villerot, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Nick Balon. Funeral services will be held Wed. Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Fr. James Gardiner officiating. The family will receive friends, Tues. Jan. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. also at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring.
