Elva Cowell

Elva O. Cowell, 97, of Eastport, passed away on July 6, 2018 at Munson Medical Center.

Elva was born February 23, 1921, in Detroit, the daughter of Herbert and Georgia (Ferguson) Ogilvie.  Residing in Eastport since 1976, Elva served as the Torch Lake Township Clerk for 22 years.  She was a longtime supporter of the Central Lake District Library, having served many years on its board, as the Board President, and provided leadership and inspiration for the Friends of the Library Bookstore.  Elva was a member of the Torch Lake Protection Alliance; Order of Eastern Star; and a supporter of the Upper Torch Lake Association, overseeing its Firemen’s Field Day for many years.

Her greatest love was her family and close friends.  She is survived by two sons, Wes (Manju) Cowell of Oak Park, IL; Casey (Dana) Cowell of Traverse City; and a nephew, Michael (Char) Ogilvie of South Lyon whom she raised from the age of 3, when he lost his mother to an accident.  She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Quinn, Aja, Mackenzie (Lisa), Whitney, and Katherine; and her dearest friend, Connie Ruggles, with whom she bonded as a sister.  She was preceded in death by her husband Grant Cowell; her beloved brother, James Ferguson Ogilvie; and dearest friends Norm and Elaine Winterhalter.

Visitation will be on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of the Mortensen Funeral Homes.

Funeral services will take place on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. also at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Bekkering officiating.  Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
