Elizabeth Hall was born on December 11, 1918 in Gratten, Michigan to Harry J. Moon and Ruby (Douglas) Moon and passed away on September 18, 2019 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility after a brief stay.
She graduated from Fremont High School in Fremont, Michigan and went on to attend Central Michigan Teachers College in Mt. Pleasant, graduating in 1939. Her first teaching job was at Roscommon elementary school teaching 6th grade. While at Central, she met her future husband John Carlton Hall, and they were married in her parent’s home in Fremont on June 20, 1940. They moved their family from St. Clair Shores, Michigan to Mancelona in June 1959.
During her teaching career, she taught in Roscommon, Flint, St. Clair Shores, Alba, and Mancelona. When teaching 6th grade at Mancelona, she started the Title 1 reading program to help students catch up and develop their reading skills. She taught there until her retirement from Mancelona in 1982. Many of her former students have told her she made a difference in their lives. She had a book in her hand until just a few days ago. After her retirement, she and her husband bought a home in Zephyrhills, Florida for the winter months. Elizabeth continued to winter there after Carlton’s death on July 28, 1986. She loved Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and vacationed there with her family for two or three weeks every summer.
She is survived by four children, Brenda (Ken) Lockman of Mancelona, Myra Crawford of East Jordan, Fred (Elaine) Hall of Suttons Bay, and Glenna (Don) Southwell of Mancelona; 12 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Orma Moon of Zephyrhills, Florida, and Doris Hall of Mancelona; and many nieces and nephews. She also had a special relationship with her friend and caregiver, Denise Nixon of Mancelona.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 46 years, John Carlton Hall; a brother, Dale Moon; two brothers-in-law, Robert Hall, and Kenneth Hall; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Crawford.
Funeral services will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Mancelona United Methodist Church, 117 Hinman St., Mancelona, MI 49659. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Interment to follow funeral services at Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona.
