GEORGE E. SMITH M.D., 95, of Torch Lake, Antrim County, passed away on Oct. 12, 2009 at St. Anne's Mead Senior Care Community in Southfield. George was born on April 12, 1914, in Lake Odessa, MI., the son of David and Mabel (Perkins) Smith. He proudly served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during World War II. George attended Albion College and then went on to the University of Michigan Medical School graduating in 1939. He held memberships with the Michigan State Medical Society, Oakland County Medical Society, Fellow American College Surgeons, the American Board of OB-GYN as well as the Central Lake Lions club. George practiced at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak from 1947 until his retirement in 1979. He resided in Bloomfield Township for many years before moving to Torch Lake in 1979 upon his retirement. On May 1, 1945 in Pittsfield, Mass., he married Marguerite Newton who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jon Smith of Birmingham, MI., Steven (Jeanne) Smith of Royal Oak, MI., two daughters, Sharon (Dennis) Blom of Edwardsville, IL., Nancy Baker of Salt Lake City, UT., a sister Marilyn McKinley of Portage, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter Carol Smith, two brothers, David Smith, Lawrence Smith and his parents. Memorial graveside services will take place in the summer of 2010 at Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Twp. The date and time of services will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are being handled by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
