Douglas C. Smith, 85, of Bellaire, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. Doug was born December 21, 1926 in Detroit, the son of King and Nora Smith. Doug was raised in Bellaire and has been a resident ever since. He proudly served in the Army during World War II and Occupied Japan. He ran his own Excavating Business and then became involved with transporting cars. On January 3, 1949 he married Doris (Taylor) Smith who survives. Also surviving are five children, Larry Smith of Mancelona, Denise (Ken) Kleeman of Mancelona, Carol (Ronald) Fent of Bellaire, Eric (Brenda) Smith of Bellaire and Dana (Carl) Draher of Bellaire; brothers, Elton Smith of Flint, Ted Smith of Arkansas, King Jr of Missouri; sisters, Connie Hughey of Central Lake, Marilyn Ziegler of Tennessee, Carolyn Pfund of Central Lake and Rosie Pippin of Suttons Bay; 17 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Kevin and Andy Smith; brothers, Gene and Bill Smith and sister, Barb Koutnik. Funeral services for Doug will be at the Bible Baptist Church in Central Lake on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Russell Tharp officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services. The burial will follow the service at Eldred Cemetery. The Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements.
