Dorothy "Dorie" Sell

Dorothy Jane Sell, 97, passed on July 31, 2017 in Charlevoix, Michigan.

Dorothy Jane was born in Dayton, Ohio.

Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Carolyn, husband Robert M. Sell, and grandson Alexander Heffling.

Surviving are her children, Robert II (Patty), Richard, Ronald (Ruthie), Randall (Peggy), Kathryn, Kimberly, Raymond T. (Christine), and Karyn (Don). Also 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was raised in Asheville, North Carolina. After graduating from high school she moved back to Dayton, Ohio. In February 1942 Robert and Dorothy Jane were married. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed working as a secretary, and receptionist, but above all she cherished time with family. In 1973 they moved to Charlevoix. After years in Michigan, relocated to Florida, then to Arizona with visits to Charlevoix during the summer. In 2006 returned to Charlevoix.

D.J. and Dorie were her treasured nicknames. She was very sociable; loved not only playing golf, but following golf on television. She delighted in hosting and attending bridge parties. She was genuinely interested in people, and their backgrounds. She relished telling stories about her childhood in North Carolina. Her passions were reading, traveling and journaling. Dorothy was profoundly thoughtful and giving; she would never forget to send a greeting card for any occasion even up until she could barely see or write. Her thoughtfulness made an indelible imprint on lives she touched. Dorie always saw the good in people and loved unconditionally. She would bear everyone’s heartaches as if they were her own. She celebrated everyone’s successes and joys. She laughed and cried simultaneously. Her presence was home to many; she had a way of making people feel special. After a visit one would leave a little wiser and stronger. She was truly our Beloved Matriarch.

A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m at St. Mary Catholic Church.
