Dorothy A. Brownell 97, summer resident of Bellaire since 1949, died peacefully Fri. June 22, 2012 at home. She was born April 23, 1915, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Walter and Margaret (Hutt) Ault. Dorothy graduated in 1933 from Highland Park High School and took a 2- year secretarial course. She went on to discover her love of art and took many different art classes throughout the years. In particular she was an abstract artist and painted in watercolor and acrylics. She was close friends of artist Charles Culver and poet Max Ellison. Dorothy was a member of the Grosse Pointe Artist Association and Naples Art Association. Dorothy loved to take care of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed flower gardening. Surviving Dorothy are her children Elizabeth (Peter) Balestrieri of Bellaire, Barbara Brownell of Naples, FL, Nancy (David) Thomas of Portland, OR, grandchildren Gwynne, Amie, Daniel, Sarah, Andrea, Katy Jo, Suzanne, Mark, Scott, David, great grandchildren Caleb, Jordan, Seth, Conor, Ruth, Jack, Andrew, Taylor, Meg, Andy, Abby, Caitlin, Maeve, Ellie Marie, step-grandchildren Andrea, Joe, step-great grandson Luca. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Robert James Brownell in 1977. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Interment will take place at Acacia Park Cemetery in Detroit. Arrangements have been handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
