Donald A. Monteith, a dedicated and hardworking individual, passed away on April 30, 2024, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan, Michigan. Born on October 10, 1933, in Detroit, Don led a fulfilling life full of achievements and cherished moments.
Don grew up in Detroit and left to attend the Leelanau’s school for boys in Glen Arbor, Michigan where he cultivated lifelong and career altering friendships with several of his classmates. In his later years, Don could be found frequently recalling his fond memories of his time and admiration for the school. Following, Don attended the Lawrence Institute of Technology where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Don's professional journey was marked by his commitment and passion for his work. He served as a powertrain engineer at Ford Motor Company, both early on and later in his career, and contributed his engineering and management skills to Steiger Tractor in Fargo, ND., and Hercules (White) Engines in Canton, OH. During his work, Don had several patents, in the automotive and agricultural industries, issued in his name. Additionally, Don ventured into owning and operating several small businesses, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
Beyond his career pursuits, Don had a profound love for trains and tractors which brought him joy throughout his life. His enthusiasm for these interests reflected his adventurous spirit and curiosity about the world around him. He was a member of the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers, the Elks Club and the Charlevoix Community Reformed Church.
In the hearts of those who knew and loved him, Don leaves behind a legacy of resilience, hard work, and kindness. He was a beloved husband to Ilona H. (Aho) Monteith, 59 years, who now carries cherished memories of their time together. Don is survived by his children Sharon Monteith of Traverse City, Deborah Nuttall of Charlevoix, Daniel (Cherie) Monteith of Charlevoix, Scott (Kathryn) Monteith of Traverse City, Andrew (Jamie) Monteith of Holland and James (Jennifer) Monteith of Charlevoix. He is also survived by his sister Beth (Gary Novak) Monteith of Lansing. In remembrance of Don's life are grandchildren Courtney, Dennis, Logan, Justin, Andrew, Rachael, Gabriel, Maxwell, Zoey; great-grandchildren Catherine, Finlay, Jack; as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents Charles and Bertha (DeMere) Monteith along with his sister Katherine Phillipson and brother Charles T. Monteith Jr.
Don Monteith will be fondly remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and work ethic that inspired many around him, and the passion he exuded for the things he loved. May he rest in peace knowing that he has left an indelible mark on the lives he touched. Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to the Charlevoix Food Pantry.
