On September 24, 2011, David Carl Van Huysen passed away in Central Lake, Michigan, surrounded by his adoring family. David died from a cancer called Mesothelioma. David lived with his wife and two daughters in Kentwood, Michigan from 1970-2004. He worked at Pine Rest Christian Hospital as a Rehabilitation Counselor for 23 years, enhancing the quality of life for many in need. He continued his career in service to others at Community Mental Health until symptoms of Parkinson's Disease required retirement in 1999. He was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene, participating in Bible Studies and singing in the church choir.
David was born on June 3, 1942 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Shirley (Pyatte) Van Huysen and KC (Bud) Van Huysen. He is predeceased in death by his parents and his brother Roger (Rod) Van Huysen. He attended Battle Creek Central High School, followed by a Bachelor's degree from Owosso College, and recieved his Master's degree from Michigan State University in Vocational Rehabilitation. He married Dianne (Ross) in 1966, and his first daughter Karla was born in 1970, followed by his second daughter Melissa in 1974. Karla lives with her husband, Shemryn Trapp in Colorado with their children Holden and Esme. Melissa lives in Florida with her husband, Joshua White and their children Griffin and Sophia.
David had many passions throughout the duration of his life. He poured great devotion and deep sincerity into his interests. Hockey, classical music, growing roses, and most of all fishing are all specialties that define and describe David. In 2004, David and Dianne retired and moved to Central Lake, Michigan, where David was free to pursue these interests with joyto his final days. David was an insightful, unique, sensitive, genuine person with quick wit and a sharp mind. He was deeply devoted to his wife of 45 years, cherished by his daughters and their families, and respected and loved by many longtime friends. He is also survived by 3 devoted bother-in-laws, Douglas, Duane and Joseph Ross and their loving wives Marylyn, Elaine and Missy and their caring children.
The family will have a Visitation from 2-5 on Friday, September 30 in the Thompson room at the Grand Rapids International Fellowship, located at 3765 Kalamazoo Ave, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49508. Burial will be at the Blaine Cemetary on 68th street at 9 am on Oct. 1, followed by a Memorial Service at 11am at the Grand Rapids International Fellowship. In lieu of flowers, David has requested donations be made to Parkinson's Research Foundation or the Patient's Assistance Fund at Pine Rest Christian Hospital.
