David Alan Hayden

David A. Hayden, 72,  of Charlevoix, MI passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 after a battle with cancer.  In his final days he was gently cared for by friend and long time caregiver Kira Kassuba and the dedicated staff at American House and Boulder Park Terrace.

David was born April 23, 1951 at Midland Hospital in Midland, MI to Thomas R. Hayden and Doreen Hayes Hayden Yobst, both now deceased.  He graduated from Midland High School in 1969.  He was an avid painter and singer/songwriter,  several of his songs were recorded and published in the early 70’s.  

David moved to Charlevoix in 1997 and opened the New World Cafe on Bridge Street.  The small storefront cafe served a seasonal menu and variety of baked goods and coffees,  and was popular with locals and tourists alike.  David enjoyed a 40+ year career in the restaurant business,  working in kitchens around the country including, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, Michigan, Miami, Florida and Bar Harbor, Maine.  

He is survived by two brothers,  James of Eaton Rapids, MI and Richard of New York, NY.,  sister-in-law Kathleen Koos Hayden,  Nieces Lauren Hayden Dyer and Elizabeth Hayden, and nephews Robert Hayden and David T. Hayden, and his beloved Labrador Roxie.  

A private service is being planned. In lieu of flowers,  memorial contributions can be made to the Charlevoix Humane Society
