Daugherty Johnson Jr.

Daugherty A. Johnson Jr., 72 of Eastport passed away on July 19, 2017 at his home.

Daugherty was born on February 7, 1945 in Port Huron, MI the son of Daugherty and Dorothy (Willis) Johnson. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era in the Special Forces as a paratrooper. Afterwards, he worked for General Motors and also served as the first director of the Flint Indian Center. He worked for the City of Flint in the Ombudsman Office and retired as a Water Pollution Control Operations Foreman. Daugherty loved spending his free time with family and friends especially his cherished grandchildren.  He also enjoyed working on tractors, all winter activities including bump jumping having won the International Bump Jumping Championship at the Petoskey Winter Sports Festival. He was a member of the Greensky Hill Indian Mission United Methodist Church of Charlevoix as well as honorary mayor of Eastport and a Citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.

On May, 11, 1968 in Flint, MI he married Elizabeth “Judy” Walker who survives. Also surviving are children, Daugherty “Duffy” (Melissa) Johnson of Central Lake, Paul Johnson of Traverse City, Theresa (Aaron) MacDonald of Huntington Woods, MI, 11 grandchildren, sisters, Doreen Wilson of Eastport, Bonita Crower of Easton, PA, and Lela Harrison of Kalamazoo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Marilyn Williams, Jackie Richmond and mother-in-law, Clara Walker.

Sunday, July 23, 2017 there will be a wake (Hymn Sing and Memory Sharing) from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. at Greensky Hill Indian Mission United Methodist Church in Charlevoix. Monday, July 24, 2017 funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Greensky Hill Indian Mission Church with Pastor Jonathan Mays officiating with luncheon immediately following. Full military honors will follow Mondays services.
