H. Dale Glass of Charlevoix passed away at home on Feb. 1, 2016, at the age of 83.
Dale’s long record of community service was highlighted by his eight-year tenure as Supervisor of Charlevoix Township from 2004 to 2012. He served a total of 35 years as a Trustee on the Charlevoix Township Board, where he was instrumental in the creation of the North Point Nature Preserve and the upgrading of Shanahan Field’s sports and recreational facilities. In recognition of these accomplishments, the township dedicated its new baseball park as H. Dale Glass Field in 2012.
Dale was born in Zeeland, Mich., and raised on a farm outside nearby Holland. He joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation from high school in 1950, just as the United States began sending tens of thousands of soldiers and sailors to the Korean War. His service on the USS Intrepid took him to the waters off Korea, as well as other ports along the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and the Caribbean Sea.
Dale continued to travel after leaving the Navy, enrolling at the University of Mexico in Mexico City. He studied accounting there, and and also acquired a lifelong love of soccer. He played on local teams in Charlevoix County, coached youth soccer, and never missed a World Cup telecast. He left Mexico and finished his work toward a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Central Michigan University, where he met fellow student Janis Arbuckle. The two were married in 1959.
Dale was employed as head accountant for the Petoskey News-Review and Charlevoix Courier until his retirement in 1995. He is survived by wife Jan; children, Craig and Laura (Scott Thomas); and granddaughters, Lindsay Thomas, Lauren Glass and Hannah Glass; as well as sister, Marilyn Cookingham; brothers, Lloyd and Ron Glass; and many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at Charlevoix Community Reformed Church, where Dale and Jan have been longtime members. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Bergmann Center, 8888 Ance Rd. Charlevoix, MI 49720, www.bergmanncenter.org ; or the Charlevoix Public Library, 220 Clinton, Charlevoix, MI 49720, www.charlevoixlibrary.org.
