CLAIR D. STEPHENSON 83, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2009 at his daughters home on Torch River following a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Clair was born on Dec. 27, 1925 in Traverse City, the son of Frank and Ethel (Wallin) Stephenson. Clair resided in Flushing for many years before moving to Torch Lake in 1985. While living in Flushing his memberships included the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Lions Club and the Amvets. He was a Cub Scout master and was a rifle and pistol instructor. While residing in Traverse City he was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, the Elks Club and was active in the Chestnutt Hills Association. Clair served his country honorably in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was a survivor in the battle of Iwo Jima where he received a purple heart for being wounded in action. On Oct. 25, 1947 in Traverse City, he married Patricia J. McGovern who survives. Also surviving are 3 children, Lynn Black of Flint, Sharon (Jim) Deater of Rapid City, Pete Stephenson of Rapid City, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Scott Stephenson in 1976, a brother Donald Stephenson as well as his parents. Clair's family would like to extend a special thank you to everyone at Munson Hospice for all their comfort and kindness at this very difficult time. Visitation will take place today (Mon) from 7-9 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at Eleven a.m. at the Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington St., Traverse City. Rev. Charles Millar and Rev. Daniel Richards will officiate. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Graveside services with military honors will take place on Wed., April 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the Flushing Cemetery, Flushing, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice, 1105 sixth St., Traverse City, Mi., 49684. Arrangements are being Handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
