Charles Johnson, 84 of Bellaire, died peacefully, Monday, February 11, 2019 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. He was born June 22, 1934, in Shelby, MI, the son of Guy and Marguerite (Sorenson) Johnson.
Charlie was very proud of his service in the U.S. Army, where he witnessed several atomic bomb tests in the Nevada desert, and fell in love with the Las Vegas area. After his discharge he vacationed there as often as possible for many years.
But he was most proud of his 52 years of service to Shanty Creek Resorts, where he worked as a front desk manager, night manager and finally, as banquet manager. Always impeccably groomed and dressed, Charlie was the consummate professional, and was honored to teach the resort's Priority One classes to employees for several years.
Always smiling, he treated customers and employees alike with the same friendly courtesy and respect.
In fact, it was the people he worked with, and the many, many friends he made over the years, that made him love going to work every day, he often said.
Never married, Charlie loved a good party in his younger years, and his parties at his home are now the stuff of legends.
In his later years, he enjoyed watching television at home with his cats, especially the wide-screen television he received as a gift for his 50th anniversary at Shanty Creek, reading newspapers, playing the Michigan lottery, and taking drives in his car, particularly if he was headed to the casino or to meet friends for lunch.
But his heart, as he said after his retirement two years ago, was always with Shanty Creek, and all of his many friends that will never forget him.
Surviving Charlie are his cousins Lynn and Tom Lotito of Spring Grove, IL. Charlie enjoyed spending time each year with Lynn and Tom at Shanty Creek. He loved going with them to the casino for their buffets and playing Lucky 7's on the slots. Other cousins surviving are Sue and Jim Hyerdall, Greg and Michelle Bohacz, and Jon and Renee Bohacz all of IL. Also surviving are special friends Robert and Dorothy Clore, Madelyn Oeder and all his wonderful and caring friends that he worked with at Shanty Creek.
Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time.
Arrangements have been handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
