Catherine J. Novotny, 85, of Charlevoix, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. She was born April 19, 1939, to Ellen (Hartlep) and Frank Steffel. She attended St. Francis Xavier High School and graduated in June of 1957. Growing up, she was involved in Girl Scouts, 4H, and sang in the choir at St. Francis Xavier.
Cathy was a member of the Petoskey Eagles Auxillary where she held various offices over the years, and also maintained a charter membership of the Kalkaska Auxillary. She became a Golden Eagle for being a devoted member for over 30 years. Cathy was a member of the Northwest Barrel Benders Horse Club, worked in the cook shack, and annually helped set up events. She also competed in the events and held the office of Vice President.
James and Catherine were married August 6, 1977, at the Congregational Church in Charlevoix. Then on April 15, 1982, they renewed their vows at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlevoix. She loved to camp, fish, and hunt with the love of her life, James.
Cathy is survived by six children, Victoria Rhine of Fayetteville NC, Pat (Sarah) Rhine of Parkton, NC, Kathleen Bradley of Charlevoix, Chery (Robert) Ripley of Traverse City, James Novotny Jr. of Charlevoix, Jeffery (Cynthia) of Charlevoix; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her brother, Bill (Sandy) Steffel; and her devoted caregiver, Maxine Miller.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Novotny; sons, Lawrence Rhine, Antonio Rhine, and George Rhine; parents, Ellen and Frank Steffel; and brothers, Donald and Bruce Steffel.
A funeral mass will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix with Fr. Peter Wigton officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until mass begins at 12:00 at the church. Interment to follow mass in St. Mary's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northern Michigan.
