Carole A. Bearss, 77, of Beaver Island, passed away on January 26, 2022 at Pineview Cottage in Harbor Springs.
Carole was born in Port Huron to Carl & Annette (Englert) Vertican in 1944. She graduated from Gaylord High School in 1962, and then went on to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. On August 20, 1966, she married the love of her life, John Henry Bearss. They first made their home in Traverse City. The two of them went on to travel for his job with the Department of Defense, residing in Mannheim, Kaiserslautern, and Wiesbaden, Germany; and in Washington, D.C. They were longtime summer residents of Beaver Island, making it their full-time home in 2006. The family will forever be grateful to the Island community for the countless acts of kindness and support shown to Carole from the time of John’s passing until her move to Pineview Cottage.
Carole was a devoted wife and mother who loved the Lord and was always active in her church. She was an avid birdwatcher, gardener, world traveler and antique collector.
She is survived by her children, Heidi Bearss of Harbor Springs, Jeremy (Genevieve) Bearss of New Market, MD; 4 grandchildren, Jonathan Bearss, Mikayla Lowell, Drew Lowell, Lorelei Bearss; a great-granddaughter, Aspyn Bearss; 3 brothers, Carl (JoAnne) Vertican of Huntington Beach, CA, Gary (Georgia) Vertican of Bedford, VA, David (Diane) Vertican of Gaylord; and an adopted son, Pierre (Lucie) Agbodenou of Luxembourg.
Preceding her in death were her husband John Bearss in 2013, her brother Scott Vertican, and her parents.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the Beaver Island Christian Church, with Rev. David Behling officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
