Carol Ann Gagnon passed away quietly in her sleep late in the evening of January 27, 2024, at her home in Charlevoix, MI, surrounded by family and her beloved cat Timmy. She was 82 years old.
Carol was born on July 8, 1941, and was lovingly adopted by Loretta and Walter Boucher of Flint, MI. She was raised there with her sister Gail and graduated as a member of the last class to attend Flint Technical High School before its doors closed. She developed a fondness for the TV show I Love Lucy that followed her into adulthood, and family vacations at Butler’s Cottage in Tawas, MI led to a love of beach life, some mischievous, teenage pranks, and a wealth of memories created with family and friends.
Carol attended St. Joseph School of Nursing from 1959 to 1962, graduating with a Diploma in Nursing. This began her fifty-four-year career as a registered nurse, an occupation that proved to be more of a passion than a job. In 1962, Carol met her future husband, John, at the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital. Their children would later report this as symbolic. The two were married in May of 1963. Following this, her places of employment included St. Joseph Hospital of Flint, Butterworth Hospital of Grand Rapids, Community Mental Health of Mt. Pleasant, and Charlevoix Area Hospital, the latter of which she worked for fifty years. Here she was known for her genuine and quality patient care, her contagious smile, and a fun-loving nature.
Carol lived a faith-filled life, and she was known to be witty and fun. She loved the beach, sunsets, reading, and caring for the wildlife that surrounded her home. Cats that she rescued became members of her family, and people in her circle were treated to a never-ending array of greeting cards. Most of all, she loved to eat.
Carol is survived by her four children, David (Theresa) Gagnon of Petoskey; Michelle (Ed) Drapeau of Traverse City, Cheryl (Rob) Wegener of Fenton; and MaryBeth Gagnon of Juneau, AK, as well as her grandson, Matthew Wegener. She also leaves behind her sister, Gail Addy of Fenton, sister-in-law Linda Crittenden of Davison, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lorretta Boucher; her step-mother Elizabeth Boucher; her husband John; her step-brother Donald Crittenden; her brother-in-law Tom Addy; her nephew John Addy; and her granddaughter Madison Wegener.
Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlevoix with Fr. Peter Wigton officiating. A luncheon will follow.
Memorial donations may be given to the Charlevoix Area Humane Society (www.CharlevoixHumane.org) , St. Mary’s School of Charlevoix (www.stmaryschoolcharlevoix.com), or the Madison E. Wegener Memorial Scholarship Fund (9142 Faussett Rd., Fenton, MI 48430).
