Bonnie Lee Elzinga, age 88, of Charlevoix MI, joined her dear friends and family in heaven on July 25, 2022. She is survived by Charlie Elzinga, her devoted husband of 69 years; Chuck and Sharon Elzinga of Charlevoix; Paul and Carol Karnitz of Minneapolis; David and Dawn Elzinga of DeWitt; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Dan and Sandy Drost of Beaver Island and Louis and Sonya Raymond of Charlevoix are also mourning her loss. Her heavenly reunion will include her parents (Lou and Eva Drost), her brother (Bud Drost) and sister (Loretta Towsley).
Her life was marked by long-lasting friendships, deep faith, and passionate gardening. She enjoyed traveling, spending summers at the beach, attending church, playing dominoes, and baking. Most of all, she loved children, becoming Gramma Bonnie and Aunt Bonnie to so many.
Bonnie’s celebration is at 2 pm Saturday, July 30, at the Center Point Assembly of God Church, 5291 M66 Hwy, Charlevoix, MI. The church is open at 1 pm so you can visit with the family before the celebration and during light refreshments served afterwards. Masks (optional) and safe distancing are encouraged. A private service will lay Bonnie to rest in Maple Hill Cemetery, Clarion, MI.
Bonnie’s family thanks Freedom House Ministries, McLaren Hospice Care, and the Area Agency on Aging for their generous support of our family, and in lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to these organizations. We also thank Emily Vanderheide, Bethann Kreitner, Maggie Dickson, Anne Marie Kauzlarich, and Jessica Babb for their tender care. Without these people and so many friends, we could not give Bonnie the in-home care that enriched her and Charlie’s lives.
Bonnie never met a baby she didn’t want to snuggle, a puppy she didn’t want to cuddle, or a mouse that didn’t make her scream. Her abiding humor, even to her last days, endeared Bonnie to caregivers, family, and friends. May she laugh with Jesus forever.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
