Betty Jane Johnson, 94 of Gaylord died peacefully, Thursday August 2, 2018 at Aspen Ridge. She was born January 12, 1924 in Detroit, the daughter of George L. and Helen M. (Peffers) Coatta.
Betty moved from Central Lake to Gaylord in 1961 and she worked many years as a care giver with the State of Michigan and in several different locations around Gaylord. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Betty was passionate about sports and for the last 25 years she was a fierce supporter of watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play them at both Gaylord Public and St. Mary’s Schools. She rarely missed a game and when they weren’t playing she went with her sons and watched them referee or watched her grandsons coach. Betty could always be found with a smile on her face and cheering loud. Betty loved the Detroit Tigers too.
On January 5, 1946 in Dearborn she married Edward J. Johnson who preceded her in death in 2004. She was also preceded in death by son and daughter in-law Edwin “Jim” (Roxann) Johnson, grandson Benjamin Johnson great grandson Thomas Golba, brother John Coatta and sister Helen Davis.
Betty is survived by her children Margaret “Pegi” (John) Jenkins of Gaylord, Judith (George) Johnston of Lapeer, George “Tom” (Jenni) Johnson of Gaylord, Stephen (Judi) Johnson of Gaylord and David (Jane) Johnson also of Gaylord. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and brother David Coatta of North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 6 at 12 Noon at the First United Methodist Church of Gaylord with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Pastor Dan Bowman and Rev John Naile will officiate. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Torch Lake Township.
