Bertha Potter

Bertha May Potter, 98, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9, 2024.  She was born on April 21, 1925, in Charlevoix, the daughter of Frank and Jennie (Nowland) Habel.

Bertha grew up on the family farm in Charlevoix with her four siblings, and never travelled too far from home.  On November 13, 1943, during an early snowstorm, she married Garrett Potter.   Aside from raising their son, Bertha operated Brums Studio for many years, which showcased many lovely art pieces.   She was also an extremely active member at the Barnard United Methodist Church, belonging to both the Women’s Society and the Women’s Coffee Clutch.   In her free time, she enjoyed exploring her family’s genealogy and that of other local families.  Bertha had an innate ability to cultivate and care for just about anything that could be planted, especially her lovely flower gardens.

Bertha is survived by her son, Gary (Jody) Potter of Charlevoix; her sister, Bernice Macy of Sault Ste. Marie; four grandchildren, Gary Potter (Jess Ard) of Boyne City, Michael (Colleen) Potter of Petoskey, Kimberly (Gary) Chrysler of Petoskey, and Megan Griffin of Boyne City; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Garrett Potter; and three brothers, Bill Habel, Bob Houghton, and Albert Houghton.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, at the Barnard United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12, at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barnard United Methodist Church.
