Surrounded at home by his family and the sounds of music, Allen Joseph Pecar, 89, of Mancelona, died peacefully September 27, 2014. Born on September 19, 1925 in Detroit, Allen was the son of Gilbert and Helen (Habarth) Pecar. On September 10th, 1949 he married Rose Marie (Wempe) Pecar in Detroit. They had ten children. Surviving are Margaret (Tony) Fallone of Harrison Township, Thomas (Brenda Mulder) Pecar of Mancelona, Robert (Debbie) Pecar of East Jordan, Mary Pecar of Bellaire, Judith (David) Crockett of Manistee, Joan (Timothy) Moore of Mancelona, Theresa (Craig) Moore of Mancelona and Kathleen (Andrew) Lightbody of Grosse Pointe. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren: Julie, Thomas, Thomas, Robert, Monica, Megan, Marissa, Jennifer, Rebecca, Kayla, Bradley, Collin, Kaylee, Rielly and Connor; 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his siblings Ethel Cenkner of Rochester, Michigan, Joseph Pecar of Maryland, and James (Carole) Pecar of Florida. Preceding him in death were his parents, sons Edward (in 1977) and John (1982) and a brother, George Pecar. Upon graduation from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Allen enlisted in the US Army on September 16, 1943 where he served as a radio repairman in the 376th Infantry. For his service, Allen was honored with an EAME Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Ribbon, Bronze Star and a World War II Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his time in the Army, Allen started his radio repair business that later became Pecar Electronics on Morang and Somerset on Detroit's eastside. For years, the "Guidon" Newsletters and McIntosh Amplifier clinics were synonymous with Allen Pecar and Pecar Electronics. Allen was widely recognized by his contemporaries as a true pioneer of the audio industry. He was a founding board member of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. In 1974, Allen moved his family north where his passion for education, the environment and gardening continued to flourish. He served on the Mancelona School Board for 20 years and on the Antrim County Parks and Recreation Board for more than 30 years. Allen was an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. In April 2012, the Antrim County Board of Commissioners adopted a Resolution of Appreciation to Mr. Pecar, recognizing him for his more than three decades of service to Antrim County; including his enthusiasm and passion that led to the preservation of more than 1,400 acres of natural wetlands owned by Grass River Natural Area, and his countless hours to park issues while utilizing his knowledge of computer databases to assist the County with tracking revenues and expenses. Allen's family extends their sincere thanks and gratitude to his many caregivers. Visitation will be Friday, October 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 5:30 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will continue Saturday, October 4 at 10:00 a.m. until time of service, 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona with Fr. Dale Magoon officiating. Graveside service at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery on West Limits Road with Military Honors. A luncheon will immediately follow in the parish hall. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church Outreach Programs, Antrim County Commission on Aging or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
