Alice Smalley

Alice Julia Smalley, 100, of Bellaire, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.  She was born on February 2, 1920 in Metamora, MI the daughter of Roy and Julia (Fowler) Gordon.

Alice graduated from high school, and shortly thereafter, she married Donald Smalley in Newport, KY on November 30, 1940.  Donald served in the United States Army during WWII, and Alice stayed home to take care of their young children.  She worked at the Federal Department Store in Flint from 1957 until 1965 when they moved to Bellaire.  While in Bellaire, she worked at Meadow Brook and then Texas Instruments in Bellaire for many years.  She was a longtime member of the Bellaire Community United Methodist Church, and she taught Sunday School for several years when they first moved to town.

She enjoyed travelling all over the United States, namely to Arizona and New Mexico with Donald to visit family.  She loved spending time with all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, and she also enjoyed watching soccer.

Alice is survived by her five children, Diane (Frank) Mayer of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Donna Kelley of Sumter, SC, David Smalley of Redford, MI, Robert (Lori) Smalley of Bellaire, MI, and Julie Fien of Bangor, MI; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald Smalley; her brother, Dean Gordon; two granddaughters, Morgan

and Tara Kelley; and her parents, Roy and Julia Gordon.

The family will hold a private burial service at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.
