Alice M. Mathews, 85, of Banks Township, died Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
She was born February 20, 1929 in Detroit to Rouben and Catherine (Colby) Karagozian. She spent her early years in various foster homes. A friend suggested that Alice write her brother Lyman Mathews who was in military service. They corresponded for several years, and when he got out of the service they were married on November 9, 1946 in Fenton, Michigan.
Alice and Lyman made their home in Banks Township and were married 53 years before Lyman died in 1997.
Alice was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mancelona. She enjoyed Bingo, cooking, singing, playing cards and board games.
Surviving are her children Dorothy (Kim Evans) Dunville-Evans of Acme, Charlie (Anna) Mathews of Shirley, Ind., Ida Mathews of Vancouver, Wash., Cynthia (Scott) Smith of Noblesville, Ind., Kathleen Mathews of Frankfort, Anna Marie Mathews of Charlevoix, Theodore (Debbie) Mathews of Fairbanks, Alaska; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a half-sister Alice Bradford of Boston, Mass.
High Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mancelona with Father James Haynos as officiant.
Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home on Friday, February 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. Rosary service will be at 7 p.m.
Burial will be in Ellsworth Cemetery in Banks Township.
